WireGuard VPN, with clear limits.
Chat256 currently includes a WireGuard VPN in its Free, Plus, Pro and Business plan catalog. The configured speed caps range from 1 Mbps on Free to 100 Mbps on Business; these are maximum caps, not guaranteed speeds. Compare current prices and storage on the plans page.
VPN access is part of an account plan, not a separate anonymous identity. A verified email address is required to provision a profile.
Set up a profile
- Create a Chat256 account and verify its email address.
- Open Account Centre and request VPN provisioning for the plan.
- Watch for a one-time download link in the verified mailbox. It expires after seven days and can be used once.
- Import the downloaded configuration into the official WireGuard app and keep the file private.
Signing out of Chat256 does not remove a configuration already imported into WireGuard.
What the tunnel protects
WireGuard encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server. Websites and services will usually see the VPN exit address instead of your device's public address. A VPN does not make you anonymous: Chat256 still knows the account and profile it provisioned, and destinations may identify you through logins, cookies or other signals. HTTPS remains important because it protects traffic beyond the VPN server.
Important product limits
- IPv6 egress is not enabled. IPv6-only destinations may not load while connected.
- The current account interface does not provide a self-service profile rotation or revocation control. If you lose a profile, contact support@chat256.com and do not assume that signing out disables it.
- Speed caps are limits, not throughput promises; location, route and network quality affect performance.
- Chat256 has not published an independently verified, complete no-logs policy. Do not choose this service for high-risk anonymity or if a verified no-logs provider is a requirement.
What data the service handles
VPN setup processes account identity, verified email, plan, assigned tunnel address, client public key, provisioning status and an encrypted profile. VPN servers and network infrastructure can process connection details such as source addresses, handshakes and traffic counters. The full inventory and retention schedule for every infrastructure log have not yet been verified and published. See the privacy notice for current usage-data retention status.
